SMILE’S

What’s in a SMILE!

Many people today have really forgotten what a “smile” is, they make the face but there is nothing at all behind that face.

My wife and I meet a young girl (now a woman) when we first found out  that my wife had dementia that changed our whole attitude about smiling.

Dementia plays ugly tricks with the mind and makes even your tastebuds tell your brain strange things.  We would regularly frequent a local coffee shop for an afternoon snack but as my wife’s dementia got worse so too did her tastebuds.  The young girl behind the counter always had a smile on her face and never once would grimace or become exasperated when I would bring my wife’s drink back to be “fixed” as it was either too this or too that, she would instead just either make a new one or adjust it.

Each time we visited I began to notice that she always greeted us with a great big smile that seemed to beam from her whole being!  Well, my wife after one of these visits even with her dementia must have remembered her as we eventually moved out of the area and when we went back to the coffee shop found that she was no longer there.  We missed her smile.

One day we had been sitting around the house bored and decided to try the local coffee shop nearest to us at our new place, we walked in and my wife all of a sudden became animated and said HELLO! to someone, this shocked me as I turned to find that the same young woman was there, with the same bright smile and warm expression was there and my wife actually remembered her!  (this was an event, as just earlier that day she had forgotten who I was).

I wish everyone could take a lesson or two from this young woman, her smile in more than a smile it’s a window to her soul!

God Bless Her!
